A New Approach to Recognising Real Teaching Experience

The world of TEFL is changing.

Today, thousands of English language teachers gain valuable practical experience through online teaching platforms, private tutoring, freelance teaching, exam preparation services, and independent language instruction. Yet many of these teachers possess substantial teaching experience without any formal recognition of that practical work.

To address this growing gap, Open-Access TEFL is pleased to introduce the Recognised Teaching Practice Certificate (20 Hours) — an innovative Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme designed to formally recognise documented teaching experience through a structured portfolio assessment process.

Why Was This Programme Created?

Many teachers begin teaching shortly after completing a TEFL course. Others build successful tutoring businesses, teach online through international platforms, or provide language support to learners around the world.

Over time, these teachers develop valuable practical skills:

  • Planning and delivering lessons
  • Adapting materials for individual learners
  • Managing online learning environments
  • Assessing student progress
  • Building learner confidence and engagement

Despite acquiring genuine teaching experience, many teachers have no formal way of demonstrating or validating this practical experience.

The Recognised Teaching Practice Certificate was developed to provide a solution.

Rather than requiring participants to complete additional training, the programme enables eligible teachers to gain recognition for teaching experience they have already acquired.

What Makes This Different?

Traditional teaching practice programmes typically involve supervised teaching sessions observed by a trainer or assessor.

The Recognised Teaching Practice Certificate follows a different model.

Through a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) framework, applicants submit evidence of previous teaching experience for assessment. This evidence may include teaching logs, lesson plans, teaching materials, student feedback, professional references, platform analytics, contracts, business records, and other supporting documentation.

The focus is not on training teachers.

The focus is on recognising teaching experience that already exists.

    Understanding the Certificate Structure

The Recognised Teaching Practice Certificate (20 Hours) consists of two components:

10 Hours – Recognised Practical Teaching Experience

Applicants demonstrate evidence of practical teaching activity through a structured portfolio submission assessed against published criteria.

10 Hours – Structured Teaching Observation & Methodology Analysis

This component is completed through approved TEFL study and focuses on the observation and analysis of teaching methodologies, lesson delivery techniques, learner engagement strategies, and professional teaching practice.

Together, these components provide a balanced recognition framework combining practical teaching experience with professional observation and analysis.

    Two Assessment Pathways

The programme offers two pathways designed to accommodate different teaching contexts.

    Online English Teaching Pathway

Suitable for teachers who have gained experience through:

    • Online teaching platforms
    • Language schools
    • Corporate training providers
    • Online academies
    • Independent contractor teaching roles

    Private Tutoring Pathway

Suitable for teachers who have gained experience through:

    • One-to-one tutoring
    • Freelance English teaching
    • Exam preparation tutoring
    • Independent teaching businesses
    • Academic support services

Both pathways utilise structured portfolio assessment and evidence review.

    Benefits for Teachers

The Recognised Teaching Practice Certificate can provide several professional benefits.

    Demonstrates Practical Experience

The certificate provides formal recognition that practical teaching experience has been reviewed and assessed through a structured process.

    Strengthens Professional Portfolios

Teachers can include the certificate within professional portfolios, freelance profiles, and employment applications.

    Supports Career Development

As teachers gain experience, documenting and validating that experience can become an important part of professional development.

    Provides Independent Verification

The programme includes a certificate verification system, providing an additional layer of credibility and transparency.

    Recognises Learning Beyond the Classroom

Not all professional learning occurs through formal courses. Many teachers develop valuable skills through practical experience, reflection, adaptation, and direct interaction with learners.

The programme acknowledges the value of experiential learning within the TEFL profession.

An Innovative Step Forward for Online TEFL

The growth of online teaching has created new opportunities for language teachers worldwide. However, pathways for recognising practical teaching experience have not always evolved at the same pace.

The Recognised Teaching Practice Certificate represents a modern approach to recognising teaching competence developed through real-world practice.

Rather than asking teachers to repeat training they have already applied in authentic teaching environments, the programme focuses on identifying, assessing, and recognising existing experience.

A Commitment to Accessible Professional Recognition

At Open-Access TEFL, we believe that practical teaching experience matters.

The Recognised Teaching Practice Certificate (20 Hours) was developed to provide a structured, transparent, and accessible mechanism for recognising that experience through evidence-based assessment.

For teachers who have already invested time, effort, and dedication into supporting English language learners, the programme offers an opportunity to gain formal recognition for the work they have already done.
